(The following are an excerpt from my autobiography after that is A Message to Muslim Americans)
During the era of the Nation of Islam (NOI), under the leadership of Elijah Muhammad; every February, the NOI held their annual Saviours Day meeting in Chicago.
I didn’t attend the meeting in 1974 because I didn’t know about it.
I was new to the NOI and wasn’t attending the Sunday meetings and didn’t know any other Black Muslim.
So I made up my mind, that I would attend the Saviours Day meeting in 1975.
A few days before the meeting, a man came into the restaurant and purchased a five pound pack of Whiting H&G.
He was acting very strange. He seemed to be nervous.
After he had given the money for the fish he said, “so is it true what the radio has been saying about Elijah muhammad?”
I asked him what did he mean.
He said the radio had been reporting all day that Elijah Muhammad was dead.
Another brother who was in the restaurant, laughed and said, “that is just the devils trying to deter people from attending Saviours Day this year.”
He then said, “every year, right before Saviours Day, the devils will do or say things to stop people from going to Chicago.”
The man said all the stations were reporting that Elijah Muhammad was dead.
After the man left the restaurant, we all laughed about it.
Saying how wicked and deceitful the devils are.
Later that day brother Larry told us that there was a special meeting called for all the brothers at the Temple that evening.
I thought the meeting was to dispel the false rumours being reported by the media; about the death of our leader.
Instead at the meeting Captain Alfonso told us that he didn’t know what was happening.
He said Minister Hamza had called Chicago and he himself had called his contacts in Chicago; but they weren’t getting any clear answers.
However, the officials in Chicago, had asked the members of the NOI around the country, not to come to Chicago for the upcoming Saviours Day meeting.
They were going to have Closed Circuit television broadcasts to all the major cities.
They asked the members in those cities to establish the places for these broadcasts.
We left the meeting that night, with unanswered questions about the death of Elijah Muhammad.
The Saviour Day CCTV broadcast was at the Cleveland Public Auditorium.
The brothers I spoke to before the broadcast began; all firmly believe that Elijah Muhammad was still alive.
That he would be speaking to us live from Chicago.
But when the first speaker began we knew something was wrong.
He spoke about our great leader in the past tense.
Every other speaker who addressed the audience spoke about the greatness of Elijah Muhammad.
It was like a tribute at a funeral.
It was very quiet and eerie in the auditorium.
The sadness in the auditorium, hung like a heavy fog.
I believe I heard a few sisters sobbing.
One by one each speaker gave their praise to Elijah Muhammad.
Jesse Jackson spoke.
Minister Farrakhan spoke.
All speaking with sadness about the passing of a great man.
Then the Fruit Of Islam commander came up and read a verse from the Qur’an.
He recited in English, “In The Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
“Muhammed is no more than a Messenger; many were the Messengers (and Apostles) that passed away before him. If he died or were slain, will you then turn back on your heels? If any turn back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah. But Allah (on the other hand) will swiftly reward those who (serve HIM) with gratitude.”
My soul was instantly elevated after he read those verses. I had read them myself, but I didn’t believe Elijah Muhammad would die anytime soon.
The verses stated that our Creator was still with us; regardless of who died.
The man Elijah Muhammad was dead; but the mission of the NOI would continue.
But who would be our leader?
Many hoped and believed it would be Minister Farrakhan.
He was Elijah Muhammad’s national spokesman.
All the radio broadcast all over the country were given by Minister Farrakhan.
Many people had joined the NOI after hearing these weekly radio broadcasts.
I was not one of those.
I had never heard of Minister Farrakhan until I joined the NOI.
Those radio broadcasts were on stations that played R&B music.
And I didn’t listen to those stations before becoming a Black Muslim.
When Minister Farrakhan spoke; his address was the same as all the other speakers before him.
Praising the accomplishment of Elijah Muhammad and mourning his death.
At that point we still didn’t know who was going to be the new leader of the NOI.
Then someone spoke and said the officials of the NOI had met and decided to give the leadership of the NOI, to one whom Fard Muhammad had said would one day be a helper to, Elijah Muhammad.
That person would be one of Elijah Muhammad’s sons.
We knew then that it would not be Minister Farrakhan.
Fard had predicted before this son of Elijah Muhammed was born; that he would one day be a helper to his father.
His name was Wallace D. Muhammad.
Fard Muhammad had written the name Wallace D. on Elijah Muhammad’s wife, Clara’s door when she was pregnant.
No one knew whether she was going to have a boy or a girl.
So that was one of Fard Muhammad’s prophecies that came true.
Wallace Muhammad later said, on many occasions; that he himself didn’t even know what the initial D in his name stood for.
Wallace Muhammad was greeted with a very loud applaud.
He came up to the podium and thanked and praised *G-D.
Then, unlike the previous speakers he spoke about G-D and about our Muslim community.
He said that our community was established because of the Will of G-D, and G-D will ensure that our Muslim community continue to grow and thrive.
My soul was elevated by his speech.
I didn’t really understood all he said because his language was so different than any other NOI minister I had ever heard before.
He wasn’t sad and teary eyes about his father’s passing.
His demeanor was not like Farrakhan’s and some of the other ministers who had spoken before him.
He exuded confidence. I had been sad when I realised that Elijah Muhammad was dead; but after Minister Wallace’s speech I felt invigorated.
On the drive from the auditorium one of the brothers in the car said he had wanted Farrakhan to be the new leader.
I told him that I was happy with the choice of Minister Wallace. I couldn’t explain in words why I was happy.
I just knew that Elijah Muhammad’s passing would not be the end of the Black Muslims.
I was wrong; Wallace Muhammad was a “real Muslim.”
The era of the Black Muslims of the NOI was coming to an end.
Within a year he had changed almost everything that the Nation Of Islam was about.
He forbid all the ministers from teaching anything about the big headed scientist Yacub; and how he had created a Caucasian race of devils.
He wrote an article that said that the real devil was the evil that resided in the hearts and minds of Human Beings.
And that devilish mentality could be found in the bodies of all races of people; not just Caucasians.
He then said Caucasians should be allowed to visit the Temples and become member if they choose to.
The name of the Nation Of Islam was changed to the World Community of Islam in the West.
All the Temples in the NOI became known as mosques.
In time all the chairs were taken out of the Mosques and replaced with carpets.
The appearance of our house of worship, now looked the same as Muslims Mosques all over the world.
Our community fasted for the first time in 1975 in the proper Islamic month of Ramadan.
We fasted for the first time, in unison with all the other Muslims around the world.
We were encouraged to read the Qur’an everyday.
Imam Muhammed taught us about the Prophet Muhammed of Arabia.
He proclaimed at a major gathering, that Prophet Muhammed was his leader.
This was a shock to many of us. We had thought his father was his leader.
He told us that the Prophet Muhammed is who he patterned his life after.

A Message to Muslim Americans of African Descent
Wallace D. Muhammed was the leader of our Islamic community from 1975 until he passed away in 2008.
Because of his understand of the Islamic religion and his way of applying and practicing the religion; the majority of the members of the NOI stayed with the community after the passing of Elijah Muhammad.
During the first five years of his leadership many ground breaking things happened.
Many world leaders in religion and politics had been aware of the the NOI; and it’s teachings.
Many knew about Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali.
Many were amazed by the drastic changes made by Wallace Muhammed.
He was invited to speak at many churches and secular organizations.
A Catholic priest in Michigan once proclaimed that the message Wallace Muhammed was teaching; was a sign from The Creator in the way we should all follow.
He was even invited to speak at a Temple of a major Jewish organization in America.
He was invited to many Muslim countries around the world.
He became an advisor to then president of the USA; Jimmy Carter.
Here is an excerp about Wallace Muhammed from fampeople.com:
Warith Deen Mohammed became a leader for interfaith cooperation and for American Muslims, speaking in numerous cities across the country for renewed ties between people.
On May 23, 1976 He conducted a massive interfaith Spiritual Life Jubilee in Los Angeles, California and spoke on the subject A New Heaven and a New Earth.
Bilalian News Muslim Journal June 4, 1976 He also conducted a Spiritual life Jubilee in Atlanta, GA and then Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson presented a proclamation to then Chief Minister Wallace D. Muhammad proclaiming the week of August 22 to 28 1976 to be dedicated to the Southern Spiritual Life jubilee.
In 1977 he participated in a Muslim-Christian dialogue in Fort Worth, Texas with Dr. Jack Evans, then President of Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas.Bilalian News Muslim Journal Vol. 2, No. 29, May 27, 1977
In February 1978 Mohammed gave a historic address before more than 1,000 Jews and Muslims at the Washington Hebrew Congregation in Washington, D.C., then under the leadership of Rabbi Joshua O. Haberman.
“Imam W. Deen Muhammad Speaks from Harlem N.Y.”, W.D.M. Publications, Chicago, Ill., p. 130 On July 15, 1978 he participated and spoke at a Spiritual Life Jubilee in Chicago, Illinois, on the subject: “Strengthening Human Dignity and Freedom.”

He was called upon for advise especially, during the difficult period when President Carter was trying to get a peace agreement, between Anwar Sadat the President of Egypt, and Menachem Begin of Israel.
On one occasion President Carter sent Air Force One; to pick up Wallace Muhammad from a city he was visiting, and to fly him to where he was.
The President wanted to talk to him face to face.
It was well known among Wallace Muhammed’s close associates, that he had given President Carter a Qur’an.
He constantly encouraged the President to study it.
When a peace agreement had been signed between the leaders of Egypt and Israel; President Carter, publicly quoted from memory, a verse from the Qur’an.
I have a photo of both Wallace Muhammed and President Carter together.
I do not have that photo with me at the present time.
Searching on the internet for it; is a waste of time.
The hidden, secret rulers of American never wanted that picture to be seen.
In fact I believe that this close relationship between President Carter and Wallace Muhammed was the reason why Jimmy Carter was not reelected President.
Although the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt was a major achievement for President Carter; and should have ensured his reelection; it did not happen.
The secret rulers were angered by his close relationship with Wallace Muhammed.
They started spreading stories through the media; which they controlled; that President Carter was an idiot.
They claimed that he knew nothing except what he was told by his advisors.
They started belittling him by calling him a ‘peanut farmer.’
The gullible Gentiles in the USA; began to believe these lies, being spread by their secret masters.
Here is what wikipedia says about President Carter during his time serving in the US Navy:
“A sprint football player for the Navy Midshipmen, Carter graduated 60th out of 820 midshipmen in the class of 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned as an ensign.
From 1946 to 1953, Carter and Rosalynn lived temporarily in Virginia, Hawaii, Connecticut, New York and California, as he served deployments in the Atlantic and Pacific fleets.
In 1948 he began officers’ training for submarine duty, served aboard the USS Pomfret.
He was promoted to lieutenant junior grade in 1949. In 1951 he became attached to the diesel/electric USS K-1, (a.k.a. USS Barracuda), qualified for command, and served in several duties including Executive Officer.
In 1952 Carter began an association with the US Navy’s fledgling nuclear submarine program led by then-Captain Hyman G. Rickover.
Rickover’s demands on his men and machines were legendary, and Carter later said that, next to his parents, Rickover was the greatest influence on his life.
He was sent to the Naval Reactors Branch of the Atomic Energy Commission in Washington, D.C. for three month temporary duty, while Rosalynn moved with their children to Schenectady, New York. On December 12, 1952, an accident with the experimental NRX reactor at Atomic Energy of Canada‘s Chalk River Laboratories caused a partial meltdown resulting in millions of liters of radioactive water flooding the reactor building’s basement and leaving the reactor’s core ruined.
Carter was ordered to Chalk River to lead a U.S. maintenance crew that joined other American and Canadian service personnel to assist in the shutdown of the reactor.
The painstaking process required each team member to don protective gear and be lowered individually into the reactor for a few minutes at a time, limiting their exposure to radioactivity while they disassembled the crippled reactor.
During and after his presidency, Carter said that his experience at Chalk River had shaped his views on atomic energy and led him to cease development of a neutron bomb.
After that experience, Carter rejoined his family to work on the USS Seawolf, one of the first two U.S. nuclear submarines, at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory which supports the U.S. naval nuclear propulsion program.
In March 1953 he began nuclear power school, a six-month non-credit course covering nuclear power plant operation at Union College in Schenectady, preparing to become an engineering officer for a nuclear power plant.
But in July his father died and the family business became his. Deciding to leave Schenectady proved difficult.
Settling after moving so much Rosalynn had grown comfortable with their life. Returning to small-town life in Plains seemed “a monumental step backward,” she said later.
On the other hand, Carter felt restricted by the rigidity of the military and yearned to assume a path more like his father’s. Carter was honorably discharged from the Navy on October 9, 1953. He served in the Navy Reserve until 1961, and left the service with the rank of lieutenant.
Carter’s awards included: the American Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; China Service Medal; and National Defense Service Medal.”
(End of Wikipedia)
The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, during the time of President Carter; said that he was the most intelligent President that he had ever had to work with.
Tip O’Neill said that he read every report that was given to him and asked very intelligent questions.
But these secret rulers, who control the media and the American people made their Gentiles believe everything bad, said about him.
So they believed that President Carter was an idiot.
And he was not reelected.
And then, these secret rulers decided to also marginalise Wallace Muhammed and his Islamic community.
They found a way to influence Minister Farrakhan to split from the Islamic community of Wallace Muhammed.
Farrakhan then resurrected the teachings of the NOI and attracted some of the former followers of the NOI.
These former members of the NOI, still wanted to believe that god was a man, blacks were a superior race and all Caucasians were devils.
With such a strange belief, you would think that the media would shun a group with such a weird belief.
But instead the opposite happened.
Minister Farrakhan was on all the talk shows during that era.
Whereas Wallace Muhammad was not.
The message was clear; these secret rulers didn’t want their dupes to hear the clear message of Islam.
Then something began around that time, that has been going on for the past 30 years.
The media have been spreading the lie; by telling their dupes that there are only two kinds of Muslims in America.
That Muslims in America are either the foreign born Muslim who have immigrated to America or the black Muslims; who follow Minister Farrakhan.
Every time there was an issue about Muslims, terrorism etc.; the media would invite a Muslim to speak about it.
These Muslim representatives were always someone who barely spoke English or spoke English with a hard to understand accent.
They wanted to reinforce the idea in the minds of their viewers; that the majority of Muslims in the USA were recent immigrants.
Their scheme worked.
The majority of Americans believe every Muslim they see is an immigrant.
It would not be too bad if these immigrant Muslims had a very good understanding of the religion of Al-Islam.
The problem is they don’t.
They come to America with the same bad understanding of Islam; that they learned in their countries
Their arrogant belief that they are superior to everyone who is not a Muslim.
That The Creator loves them more because they are Muslims.
That they alone have an understanding about The Creator.
That they alone will go to Heaven because they are Muslims.
They come with their religious hatred of others who don’t practise the religion the way they do.
And because of this arrogant conceit of themselves; it is seen in their standoffish behaviour towards others who are not Muslims.
They even display this arrogance towards Muslim Americans.
They erroneously believe that The Creator loves and favours them more because of their ancestral heritage.
My appeal is to the Muslim Americans who were members of Wallace Muhammed’s Islamic community.
It is time to get up, stand up and start to deliver the sensible message of how to practise Islam in this modern world.
We have to share with all Americans the true image of Al-Islam
Since Imam Muhammed’s passing in 2008; it seems like the leaders of his community went into a shell.
I expected to see the ones who were his close associates; those who travelled with him, to start making an impact in America.
They saw close-up his Muslim mannerism and behaviour.
They heard more of his lectures than many members like myself had the opportunity to.
Where are these leaders now?
What are they doing to make America a greater place for all its’ citizens?
Foreign born Muslims are not the ones missioned by The Creator to bring about a positive change to our country.
